Pest Control & Spiders: Do’s & Don’ts

Spider

We’ve all had spiders and other unwanted guests in our home. Whether you find these creepy crawlers annoying or live in fear of them, it’s important to remember that spiders often don’t actually pose a threat to humans. While cobwebs and spider bites are nuisances, most spiders that make their way into your home won’t hurt you. They can even be beneficial–spiders can actually help keep the population of other pests under control!

That said, you certainly want to avoid dealing with poisonous spiders (or any spiders if you have a phobia!). Check out our spider control tips for keeping your home spider and pest-free, or contact the professionals at CJB Pest Control in Farmington Hills, MI, for all your pest control needs!

How do I get rid of spiders?

A spider infestation isn’t ideal, no matter how you feel about these eight-legged creatures. If you spot spiders in your home, you have options for how to eliminate them and prevent a future infestation.

The Do’s

Keep It Clean

Regular vacuuming, especially in corners, closets, entryways, and under furniture, will treat existing spiders and deter new ones from setting up shop in your home. It will also eliminate any eggs or webs, helping your home to be pest-free.

Seal and Treat Entry Points

When the weather gets warmer, it’s a good time to check the entry points to your home for broken seals. Treat these entry points by sealing all the cracks and crevices and then treating the areas. You can purchase an insecticide or repellent or try peppermint essential oils. Spiders and other insects hate the smell and steer clear of your home.

Set Traps

After eliminating access points to your home, you can trap any existing spiders you may have missed with glue traps. Any pest or rodent glue trap will trap spiders and other insects before they can make your home their home.

The Don’ts

Clutter & Debris

Remember to clear all debris like lawn clippings, branches, limbs, and wood away from the outside of your house. And, make sure to clean out all clutter from any dark, cool, and dry places in your home, like your basement or attic. Spiders love calling these spots home.

Avoid Dangerous Spiders

Black widow or brown recluse spiders are less common but pose a threat if not treated properly. The Black Widow is a black spider with a red hourglass figure on its abdomen, while the Brown Recluse is brown with what looks like the figure of a violin on the back of its head. These spiders are more common in warmer climates and are more common in the summer months. If you see either, call a professional extermination company.

What To Do if You Are Bit

If you are bit by a spider, don’t panic. Most spider bites are irritating and itchy but will heal on their own with no risk to your health. If you are bit by a Black Widow or Brown Recluse, seek medical attention immediately. Washing the area with soap and water or icing to reduce swelling can help with symptoms.
